Emergency Department Expansion

Emergency Department Expansion and Re-model Campaign

“Mercy Medical Center Redding’s Emergency Department Trauma center serves approximately one-quarter of California’s land mass. Our Emergency Department saves the lives of many people from this region daily, with a high percentage of patients who are uninsured. The need for our services is growing, and support is necessary for us to expand the Emergency Department/Trauma Center to meet the future needs of residents within our region.” - Mark Korth, CEO/President, Mercy Medical Center Redding

The Emergency Department Expansion Project at MMCR is an undertaking that addresses the needs of an Emergency Department (ED) where current volume has increased to the point where the demand is often higher than the 22 beds currently available.

The ED at MMCR accounts for 50% of the hospital’s admissions and had approximately 55,000 patient visits in fiscal year 2010**; the facility was designed to accommodate 44,000 patients. By 2015, projected annual visits will exceed 57,000.

The ED project at MMCR includes a 4,165 sq. ft. expansion, remodeling of 11,853 of space on the first floor of the main hospital building. 21 parking spaces have been relocated in anticipation of the commencement of construction, and a new ambulance triage area will be added at the entry to the unit.

The two trauma bays will be upgraded and expanded. The new space will allow for an increase in the number of patient care bays from 22 to 30; these bays will be private rooms (the majority of the current rooms are separated by a curtain), which will meet the Joint Commission (JC) and the Department of Health Services (DHS) privacy requirements.

The expansion includes two treatment rooms designed to better accommodate psychiatric patients. Additionally, approximately 500 sq. ft. of the expansion was dedicated to remodeling the existing lab area in anticipation of the commencement of construction to provide improved support for ED patients. The project also includes expansion of the existing radiology room and a remodel of the critical care areas.
