Mercy Medical Center Mt. Shasta OB Expansion

Fundraising Efforts Completed for Mercy Medical Center Mt. Shasta’s Obstetrics Department!

After two years of fundraising for new equipment for Mercy Mt. Shasta’s Obstetrics Department, Mercy Foundation North was able to disburse $191,000 to the hospital for the purchase of new fetal heart monitors and a central monitoring station for the nurses’ station.

Central monitors are remote monitors that display data collected from several patients. They allow for enhanced monitoring of several patients concurrently. Fetal heart monitors let our clinicians monitor the baby’s heartbeat in the uterus and the presence and duration of uterine contractions. These monitors allow nurses and doctors to check if the baby is experiencing fetal distress and how well the baby is tolerating the contractions. The new monitors provide both audible and visual alerts if the fetal heart rate is outside of the normal range. They are also cordless, allowing patients more freedom of movement during labor and more flexibility in choice of birthing positions. This technology does not replace direct monitoring from clinicians - it simply enhances the care already given by allowing for constant surveillance of mother and baby, and an uninterrupted record of all events throughout labor and delivery.

Morris Eagleman, Mercy Mt. Shasta’s Vice President of Patient Care Services states, “Mercy Medical Center Mt. Shasta is very fortunate to have a community that supports its residents and their hospital. The equipment will further enhance the patients' comfort and safety for many years to come.”
