The Christmas Tree Fantasy, a three-day festival of events sponsored by the Mercy Medical Center Redding Guild, celebrated its 21st anniversary in 2008. The 2008 event focused on the comedy theme, "Laughter is the Best Medicine," and Marvin Picard kept humor in the air as the Master of Ceremonies. A fun-filled luncheon designed to get everyone in the holiday spirit on Friday featured fashions from Gottschalk's and Elegant Sole. On Saturday night, guests were ushered into "Comedy Central" with theme tables, complete with props
(Lucille Ball's "I Love Lucy" table, George Burns's table with "stogies" and large lense glasses, Steve Martin's table with "arrows through the head" gear), and featured comedian Brad Bonar, Jr., who kept the mood jovial. Participants in the "Name That Tune" contest included John DiPerry, Dr. David Civilier, Rick Barnett, Carolyn Helfenstein, Sister Brenda O'Keeffe and VP Linda Horn. Proceeds will be used to support the expansion of the much-needed Mercy Medical Center Redding's Emergency Department. Volunteer Manager, Shirley Knight, reported that "this was a very successful and a really fun event." The event, held at Redding’s Holiday Inn, lasted three days and included a fashion show luncheon, silent and live auctions, an evening "dinner with an informal comedy club atmosphere," and a Teddy Bear Family Festival on Sunday. Hundreds attended the events, which also featured beautifully donated and decorated trees that were auctioned.
The Guild’s goal is to help bridge the gap between the medical center’s resources and the special needs of patients and staff to help make patients feel safe, comfortable and well cared for.
